The Ambassador has been a landmark in Northwest Baltimore since it first opened its doors. Now, reimagined, it is being brought back to its community as a home for Black art, culture, and community, shaped by and with the people of this neighborhood.

What's Left to Raise
In 2016 we held community design sessions to begin shaping the vision for the Ambassador together. Those sessions were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Read the 2020 Ambassador Theater Engagement Report here.
In 2024, we resumed community gatherings to share project updates and invite neighbors to help envision how the spaces will be used. The results of these conversations are shaping the governance and leadership of the organization, and building a model rooted in racial equity and community accountability.
Restoring the Ambassador is a $29 million investment in this community's future. It covers construction, outfitting, and the resources needed to bring this vision to life.
As of June 2026, approximately $19 million has been raised or secured toward this goal through federal and state historic tax credits, public funding commitments, and an active application for New Market Tax Credits, a federal program that helps finance community development projects like the Ambassador Center for Arts and Culture.

$10 million is still needed to close the gap. This funding will cover the remaining development and construction costs and support the people, systems, and relationships required to launch the Ambassador Center for Arts & Culture and sustain its success for years to come.
Fundraising is underway and is supporting the work happening right now to prepare for a successful launch.
The Ambassador is now a state-designated historic landmark. Restoring it for contemporary use is a careful process, but worth the patience it requires.
Environmental remediation is currently underway to address fire damage and years of neglect. Once complete, the next phase will implement the architect's community-approved design and outfit the space with modern equipment and flexible furnishings.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027.

The governance, leadership, and decision-making model for the Ambassador will center power within those expected to benefit most from this space. Weaving together the voices of neighbors and artists is a process of testing, learning, tweaking, and improving. The approaches we develop together will be embedded in the way the Ambassador operates for years to come.
Along the way, we are deepening everyone's understanding of and connection to each other, and building our collective ability to work toward shared goals.

Launching a new organization means putting the right people in key roles, building sustainable operations and programs, and staying responsive to the community and its needs. During this period, Ambassador Arts is committed to establishing the systems, processes, and partnerships that support its mission and values as we prepare it to stand fully on its own.
